Abstract

Urdu literature, particularly poetry, has evolved significantly through the years. One of the critical phases in its development is the era of Mehjari (exiled) poetry. This genre emerged as a response to socio-political upheavals, displacement, and the emotional experiences of migration. This article explores the evolution, characteristics, and themes of Mehjari poetry, analyzing its contribution to the broader landscape of Urdu literary tradition. Focusing on the works of notable exiled poets, the paper examines their poetic expression of pain, identity, and longing for the homeland, as well as the impact of diaspora culture. The study sheds light on the complexities and the emotional spectrum of migration, the search for belonging, and the portrayal of cultural displacement in Urdu poetry.
