The tradition of biographical writing in Azad Kashmir, particularly with reference to the lives and services of Ulama and Sufi saints, holds a significant literary and intellectual dimension. The presence of religious and spiritual centers in this region, along with the contributions of Sufi saints and Ulama, deeply influenced the socio-cultural and intellectual fabric of Kashmiri society. In order to preserve their legacy, different scholars and writers have, from time to time, produced short booklets, essays, and journal articles that record their lives and achievements. Although these works do not fully conform to the established principles of biography as a literary genre, they nevertheless provide essential details and valuable insights into the personalities being discussed. The quarterly journal Anwar al-Awliya published by the Department of Auqaf, as well as biographical booklets produced under the aegis of the Majlis-i-Tahqiq wa Tasnif, stand out as notable examples of this tradition. These writings shed light on the spiritual endeavors of Sufi saints, the scholarly struggles of Ulama, and their roles within the larger religious, political, and social movements of the Indian subcontinent.
