Abstract

This paper presents a comparative analysis of the elegiac poetry of two iconic figures in Urdu literature, Anis and Dabir, whose works have left an indelible mark on the tradition of Marsiya (elegy) writing. The focus of this study is to examine their thematic concerns, stylistic features, and their contributions to the evolution of the Marsiya genre in Urdu poetry. Anis, known for his deeply emotional and tragic portrayal of historical events, contrasts with Dabir, whose poetic expressions are characterized by grandeur and elevated rhetoric. Through a comparative lens, this article aims to explore how both poets depicted grief, martyrdom, and historical events, contributing to the development of a distinctive elegiac style in Urdu. This study also investigates the nuances of their language, symbolism, and narrative techniques, which helped shape the Marsiya into an influential poetic form.
