Abstract

The 19th century marked a significant turning point in the development of the Urdu novel as a literary genre. During this period, the Urdu novel not only evolved stylistically but also played an essential role in shaping and reflecting the cultural identity of its time. This article explores the representation of cultural identity in the Urdu novels of the 19th century, focusing on the intertwining of socio-political, cultural, and colonial influences that shaped the narrative style and themes. The study examines prominent works such as Mirat-ul-Uroos by Syed Ahmed Khan, Umrao Jan Ada by Mirza Hadi Ruswa, and Bazm-e-Aman by Maulvi Nazir Ahmed, and investigates how these novels portrayed issues of gender, society, colonialism, and the emerging national consciousness. Through this analysis, the article explores the role of literature in constructing and negotiating cultural identity in the context of a rapidly changing colonial society.
